The vast majority of bacteria are heterotrophic, meaning they cannot synthesize their own food and instead depend on other organisms or dead organic matter for nutrition. These bacteria are highly diverse and include major decomposers and parasites. While bacteria as a group exhibit the most extensive metabolic diversity, the autotrophic mode (photosynthetic or chemosynthetic) is found only in a minority of species, such as cyanobacteria.
